Bitcoin is one of the most traceable cryptocurrencies there is: its ledger is fully public and permanent, so every transaction stays visible forever. Forensic analysis can follow stolen BTC hop by hop, group the attacker's addresses, and determine whether the funds reached an exchange, entered a mixer, or are sitting still. Why Bitcoin is so traceable
Contrary to what many people believe, Bitcoin isn't anonymous — it's pseudonymous. The entire ledger is public, and anyone can look up any transaction in a block explorer. That ledger is permanent and immutable: what happened is recorded forever and can't be erased or edited.
This is exactly what makes forensic tracing possible. Every BTC that moves leaves a trail connecting the sending address to the receiving one, and that chain of hops can be fully reconstructed — no matter how much time has passed since the theft.
The UTXO model and address clustering
Bitcoin doesn't work with account “balances” — it works with UTXOs: pieces of received BTC that are spent whole, like banknotes. When the attacker builds a transaction, they almost always combine several UTXOs from different addresses they control to gather the amount they want to move.
That detail is gold for analysis. The co-spend heuristic starts from a simple idea: if several addresses fund the same transaction, they most likely belong to the same person. Applied at scale, this groups (clusters) dozens or hundreds of addresses under a single entity, so the attacker can be followed even when they hop from one address to another to throw you off.
- UTXO: each piece of BTC is spent whole; the change comes back as a new UTXO, often to the attacker's own change address.
- Co-spend: addresses that jointly fund a transaction tend to share one owner.
- Clustering: an entity's addresses are grouped to see the full picture, not one isolated address.
- Change addresses: spotting the change keeps the thread from breaking when the attacker splits the funds.
Where stolen Bitcoin tends to go
Once they've stolen it, the attacker has to do something with the BTC, and that movement is what we trace. The typical paths are a handful, and they aren't all equally good for you:
- KYC exchanges (Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, etc.): the best outcome. If the funds enter a platform that verifies identity, there's a regulated entity to submit the evidence to and a point where the trail can touch a real person.
- Mixers and CoinJoin (Wasabi- or Samourai-style services): they blend many users' funds to break the link between origin and destination. They genuinely reduce traceability — and that has to be said honestly.
- Peel chains: the attacker “peels” off small amounts across a long chain of transactions, sending most of it back as change again and again to dilute the trail and wear down anyone following it.
- Idle private addresses: sometimes the funds simply sit unmoved, waiting. That's documented too, and any future movement reactivates the trace.
What tracing can and cannot do
Tracing reconstructs the full path of your BTC, groups the attacker's addresses, and identifies the exit points — above all, whether the money touched a known exchange. That's what turns a theft into actionable evidence.
Now the honest part: when funds enter a mixer or a well-executed CoinJoin, the trail becomes much harder and sometimes can't be followed with certainty on the other side.
